How Is Calculated Water Production Determined?

When monthly water production is not reported directly, WellDatabase can use available water data to establish the relationship between water and the well’s oil or gas production. The calculation requires either:

• A well test that includes a water volume
• An aggregated lease- or pad-level produced water volume

WellDatabase uses the available water data alongside production data to determine monthly water volumes for the individual well. 

When water production is reported by the state at an aggregated lease or pad level, WellDatabase uses the reported water volume and allocates it to the individual wells. 

Texas Example

Texas does not report monthly water production directly.

For Texas wells, WellDatabase uses water information reported with the well’s test records to model the water cut, water-to-oil, or water-to-gas relationship. That factor is then applied alongside allocated oil and gas production to estimate the water volume attributable to the individual well over time.

At the lease level, calculated water volumes for the individual wells can be summed to provide a lease-level water calculation.

Kansas Example

Kansas also does not report monthly water production volumes directly through the state. 

Within WellDatabase, Kansas water volumes are inferred at the well level using water-oil ratio relationships derived from IP tests and subsequent test records over the life of the well. Those calculations are then applied alongside the allocated oil and gas production volumes.
