How is production allocated from the lease (or PUN/LUW) to a well?

Production is not always reported at the individual well level. These resources explain the methodology WellDatabase uses to allocate production from leases, PUNs, LUWs, and other reporting entities to the underlying well records.

Production is not always reported directly at the well level. For example, many states commonly report production at the lease level, Oklahoma uses Production Unit Numbers (PUNs), and Louisiana uses Lease Unit Wells (LUWs). When multiple wells are associated with one of these reporting entities, WellDatabase allocates the reported production to the individual wells using our allocation methodology.

The resources below explain the methodology using Texas as an example. Similar allocation concepts may also apply in other states when production is reported at a level above the individual well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is allocated production?
A:  Allocated production is production that has been assigned from a lease, PUN, LUW, or other reporting entity to the associated well records.

Q: Why does production need to be allocated?
A: Some regulatory agencies report production at the lease (PUN/LUW) level instead of directly on each well.  When multiple wells are associated with that reporting entity, WellDatabase allocates the reported production to the associated wells using our allocation methodology.

Q: Where can I learn more about the allocation methodology?
A: The linked blog posts and Texas Production Allocation webinar explain the methodology in more detail.

Q: Can Lite users access allocated production values?
A: No. Allocated production values are available with paid subscription levels and are not available with Lite accounts.

Q: Is allocation specific to Texas?
A: No. Texas is used as the example in these resources, but allocation may apply when production is reported at a lease, PUN, LUW, or similar reporting level instead of directly at the well level.
