How can I export all wells for an entire state?

Exporting wells by county or parish is the most reliable method for creating a complete statewide well inventory. This article outlines the recommended workflow and explains why geographic exports are preferred for statewide research projects.

For the most complete statewide inventory, WellDatabase recommends exporting wells by county or parish and combining the results into a single dataset.

 Recommended workflow

  1. Filter by state and county: Select the state you want to research and choose a single county (or parish).

  2. Export the results: Run an export for the selected county and save the file. If you need help creating an export, see the related articles section below. During Step 5 of the export wizard, consider naming the file after the county (or parish). This can make it easier to organize and combine multiple exports when building a statewide dataset.

  3. Repeat for remaining counties: Continue exporting each county or parish within the state until all geographic areas have been processed.

Why export by county?

County-based exports use geographic boundaries rather than production characteristics. This helps ensure that wells are included regardless of whether they are:

  • Producing

  • Shut-in

  • Permitted

  • Abandoned

  • Historical wells with limited production records

For statewide well inventories, county-based exports provide the most complete and auditable approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does WellDatabase recommend county-based exports?
A: County-based exports rely on geographic boundaries rather than production activity. This provides the most reliable method for building a complete statewide well inventory.

Q: Can I use First Production Date to export all wells in a state?
A: First Production Date can be useful for organizing large exports of wells with production into smaller groups, but it should not be used as the primary method for identifying all wells within a state. Some wells may not have a First Production Date, which can result in an incomplete dataset.

Q: Can I use production filters to export all wells in a state?
A: Production-based filters are designed to identify wells with specific production characteristics. Because some wells may not have production records available, production filters may exclude wells that should be included in a complete statewide inventory.

Q: Can I export data with a Lite subscription?
A: No. Data exports are not available with Lite subscriptions.

Q: How many exports are included with my subscription?
A: Export allowances vary by subscription level. Refer to the Compare Plans page for current export limits and feature availability.
