What is the difference between Reported Operator and Aliased Operator?

WellDatabase provides Reported Operator, Aliased Operator, and Parent Company fields because each serves a different purpose. This article explains why all three are available.

WellDatabase provides both Reported Operator and Aliased Operator values because they serve different purposes. Some users prefer to work with the original state-reported value for auditing and regulatory research, while others prefer a standardized value that makes searching and analysis more consistent across states and reporting periods.

Reported Operator

The Reported Operator preserves the operator name exactly as it was reported by the state regulatory agency.

Using the original reported value allows you to:

  • Compare WellDatabase data with state records.

  • Trace data back to its original source.

  • Review historical regulatory information exactly as it was reported.

Because operator names are entered by many different agencies and operators, reported values may contain differences in punctuation, abbreviations, capitalization, spacing, typos, or other formatting conventions.

At WellDatabase, we are committed to upholding the integrity of our dataset by acknowledging the significance of these reported values.

Aliased Operator

The Aliased Operator is a standardized version of the reported operator name.

WellDatabase standardizes common naming variations to improve consistency across the platform while preserving the original reported value.

The Aliased Operator is commonly used for Searching, Filtering, Reporting, and Analytics.

Operator names may continue to be standardized over time as additional reported variations are identified. This helps improve search results while preserving the original reported value for reference.

Parent Company

The Parent Company field groups operators under their current parent company, making it useful for corporate-level reporting and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) analysis.

The Aliased Operator is not a roll-up of subsidiaries, acquisitions, or parent companies. If one company acquires another, the Aliased Operator does not automatically change to the parent company unless the regulatory records reflect an official operator change.

If you want to analyze operators at the corporate level or group operators following mergers and acquisitions (M&A), use the Parent Company field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why doesn't the Reported Operator match the Aliased Operator?
A: The Reported Operator preserves the operator name exactly as it was reported by the state regulatory agency. The Aliased Operator standardizes common naming variations to improve searching, filtering, reporting, and analytics while keeping the original reported value available.

Q: Which operator field should I use?
A: The best choice depends on your workflow. Use the Reported Operator when comparing against state records or reviewing the original regulatory value. Use the Aliased Operator for most searching, filtering, reporting, and analytics. Use the Parent Company field when you want to group operators under a common parent company or analyze mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

Q:  Does the Aliased Operator combine subsidiaries?
A: No. The Aliased Operator standardizes naming variations for the same operator. It does not combine operators under a common parent company or reflect mergers and acquisitions (M&A). If you want to analyze wells at the corporate level, use the Parent Company field instead.

Q: Can the Aliased Operator change over time?
A: Yes. As additional naming variations are identified, WellDatabase may update the Aliased Operator to improve consistency across the platform. The original Reported Operator remains unchanged and continues to reflect the value reported by the state regulatory agency.

Q: Why are both Reported Operator and Aliased Operator available?
A: The two values serve different purposes. The Reported Operator provides transparency by preserving the original state-reported value, while the Aliased Operator provides a standardized value for more consistent searching, filtering, reporting, and analytics.
