In this article, we will explore the concept of the Aliased Operator and clarify how it differs from the Reported Operator.
We prioritize your ability to trace our data back to its original source. By offering analytics for both reported and aliased operators, we ensure transparency in our aliasing processes. Some of our users prefer to work with the reported value while others prefer to work with the normalized aliased value.
Reported Operator
The reported values may include typos, inconsistencies, and other discrepancies. However, they also provide insights into the precise data as it has been reported, particularly in cases where an operator operates under multiple company names across different regions.
At WellDatabase, we are committed to upholding the integrity of our dataset by acknowledging the significance of these reported values.
Aliased Operator
The aliased value is the value we have cleaned and normalized. We have carefully standardized variations such as misspellings, differences in punctuation, and the various names under which companies may operate.
It is important to note, the aliased value is not a roll-up of subsidiaries. Meaning, when a company is acquired by another - we do not change the operator to the new company name, unless the company files a change of operator form to update the company to the new name.
The process of establishing aliased values is ongoing. With each permit or completion filed and every month of production reported, there exists the potential for a company to be reported differently. This means that our efforts to maintain accuracy are dynamic and always evolving.
