How do I use a shapefile as a search area?

WellDatabase allows you to upload a shapefile as a custom Area of Interest (AOI) within the Filters panel. Multiple polygons from the shapefile can be combined into a single search area. Wells with a surface hole, bottom hole, or lateral that intersect any of the uploaded polygons will be included in the search results.

How to Upload a Shapefile for Search

  1. Open the Filters panel and locate Area of Interest.

  2. Click the pencil icon next to the Area of Interest filter.

  3. Select Custom, then choose Load File.

  4. Click Choose File and select your shapefile .zip file.

  5.  Click Apply to load the shapefile polygons into your search area.

Search Results Using Shapefiles

Once applied, wells intersecting any uploaded polygon will be included in the search results, including:

  • Surface hole locations
  • Bottom hole locations
  • Laterals passing through the polygons

Results will be displayed in the:

  • Map
  • List
  • Analytics

This flexibility enables you to tailor your analysis to specific ownership sections or boundaries that are important to your project.

Shapefile Limits

  • Up to 100 AOIs can be loaded at one time.

  • If the shapefile contains more than 100 polygons, only the first 100 will load.

  • Large or highly complex shapefiles may impact browser performance.

Performance Considerations

Large or highly detailed shapefiles containing many polygons may impact browser or system performance.

If performance becomes slow:

  • reduce the number of polygons in the shapefile
  • split large shapefiles into smaller subsets
  • load only the areas needed for the current search

Important Notes

  • Shapefiles must be uploaded as a .zip file containing all required shapefile components.

  • Multiple polygons can be combined into a single search area.

  • Wells intersecting any polygon in the shapefile will be included in the search results.
