How do I zoom in or out of my map?

WellDatabase provides several ways to navigate the map, from basic zoom controls to tools that automatically focus on your search results. Understanding these options can help you explore data more efficiently.

Navigating the map is an important part of exploring and analyzing well data. Whether you're reviewing a single lease or searching across multiple states, the map includes several tools to help you quickly move between areas and control how search results are displayed.

Mouse Scroll

You can simply use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in or out. Scroll forward to zoom in and backward to zoom out. This method provides a quick and intuitive way to adjust the map to your desired level of detail.

Map Zoom Controls

These controls consist of plus (+) and minus (-) buttons or icons located at the right size of your map, just above the legend. Clicking the plus button will zoom in, while clicking the minus button will zoom out. This method is particularly useful if you prefer a visual representation of the zooming action.

Zoom to Extents

The zoom to extents option is extremely useful when you have zoomed into a specific location within your map. It allows you to quickly zoom out and display all the wells that match your search criteria. You can find the zoom to extents button conveniently located just below the legend on the right side of your map.

Zoom Box

To explore an area in more detail, you can easily create a zoom box by holding down the shift key and left-clicking your mouse. Then, simply draw a box around the specific area you want to zoom in on and take a closer look. Side note: For those who have fond memories of the 80's and remember boom boxes, you'll get a gold star when you think of a zoom box.

Zoom to Results

The Zoom to Results feature is available in two places within WellDatabase. Both perform the same action—moving the map to your search results—but they are triggered in different ways.

Zoom to Results Message on the Map → A temporary button that appears when your search results are outside the current map view.

Zoom to Results Option → A setting that automatically performs the same action after every search, or a new filter is added.

1. Zoom to Results Message:

If your current search returns wells that are outside the visible map, a notification appears at the top of the map indicating that no results are visible in the current viewport. Click Zoom to Results to automatically pan and zoom the map so the matching wells are visible.

This message only appears when matching wells exist outside the current map view.

2. Zoom to Results Option:

You can choose to automatically zoom to your results every time you change the filter options.

If enabled:

        • Every search automatically pans and zooms the map to display the matching wells.

If disabled:

        • The map remains centered on your current working area while search results and analytics continue to update.

Tip: If you're repeatedly refining searches within the same geographic area, consider turning Zoom to Results off to keep the map centered on your current working area.

To change this setting:

        1. Click the arrow next to the Search button at the bottom of the Filters panel.

        2. Check or uncheck Zoom to Results.

        3. Click the arrow again to close the search options. Your preference is saved automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does my map zoom all the way out to a North America-wide view after I search?
A: Zoom to Results is likely enabled. When enabled, the map automatically pans and zooms to display the wells returned by your search. If you want to continue refining your search within the same geographic area, turn Zoom to Results off from the search options menu.

Q: What is the difference between the Zoom to Results message and the Zoom to Results option?
A: The Zoom to Results message appears only when your search results are outside the current map view, allowing you to navigate to those results on demand. The Zoom to Results option is a saved preference that automatically performs the same action after every search.

Q: Does turning off Zoom to Results affect my search results?
A: No. Turning off Zoom to Results only changes how the map behaves after a search. Your search results, filters, and analytics remain the same.

Q: When should I leave Zoom to Results enabled?
A: Leave Zoom to Results enabled when searching across large geographic areas or when you want the map to automatically locate the wells returned by your search. Turn it off when repeatedly refining searches within the same geographic area to keep the map centered on your current working area.
