How do I create a time lapse animation for activity over time?

You have the ability to generate a time lapse animation that visually demonstrates changes and trends across various activities, such as permitting, completions, rig movements, production, and more.

This feature enables you to analyze data patterns, helping to identify key developments and operational trends within your area of interest.

Area of Interest

Let's start by applying filters to your area of interest.

Apply the Animation

To view your data as an animation, open the tools panel on the right side of the map and select the “play” button.

A new window will appear, giving you options to choose the specific activity—such as permitting, completions, rigs, or production—you want to visualize over time.

In this example, we’ll focus on wells by selecting their first completion date.

Enter the start date to define when your animation will begin. You can leave the end date blank, or you can specify an end date to limit the time range and focus on a particular period.

In this example, I have checked "Inclusive Animation," which allows well spots to remain visible as new wells are completed throughout the animation. This approach builds a cumulative view of well activity over time, making it easier to see how development has progressed in your area of interest. Select "Run" to start the animation.

As the animation plays, keep an eye on the date range displayed at the bottom of the screen. This range updates dynamically to match the timeframe being visualized, helping you correlate well activity on the map with specific periods in your development timeline.

Side Note: Keep in mind that if you have over 50,000 wells on showing in the animation at any given time, the well spots will cluster. Here is an article with additional clustering information: Why are the well spots clustered?

You have full control over the animation as it plays. If you want to pause and review the data at any point, simply click the pause button in the animation box at the bottom left of your screen—you can restart the animation from there whenever you’re ready. To stop the animation completely, click the red "X".

As the animation progresses, you'll notice that the "First Completion Date" filter updates automatically to reflect each additional month shown on the timeline. When you pause or stop the animation, those dates remain active in your filter.

Conclusion

Leveraging the animation features in WellDatabase gives you a powerful way to visualize and understand how oil and gas activity evolves over time.
